Abstract :

PSI has experience implementing point-of-use safe drinking water programs in 30 countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.  Using simple, often locally produced products that can purify unhealthy drinking water, PSI conducts behavior change activities, marketing campaigns, and outreach to vulnerable and poor populations to help address the chronic shortage of safe drinking water.  PSI partners with private sector providers in the countries where we work as well as with international consumer goods companies such as Procter and Gamble to make these products available.  PSI’s in-house Research Department provides the tools and methodology we use to track the effectiveness of our interventions over time, in terms of water-borne disability and deaths averted.  This presentation will provide an overview of PSI’s work in point-of-use safe water solutions.

About Population Services International

PSI is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that harnesses the vitality of the private sector to address the health problems of low-income and vulnerable populations in more than 60 developing countries. With programs in malaria, reproductive health, child survival and HIV, PSI promotes products, services and healthy behavior that enable low-income and vulnerable people to lead healthier lives. Products and services are sold at subsidized prices rather than given away in order to motivate commercial sector involvement.  Nearly 40 years old, PSI is the leading nonprofit social marketing organization in the world.
