Network design and evaluation: only the state-of-the-art will do when your network is in a real 'state'.

The state-of-practice in transport planning in South Africa is unfortunately based on dated technology, and does not take two unique characteristics of South Africa, and developing economies in general, into account: the dynamic nature of transport for the paratransit minibus taxis, and the unique land use challenges in South Africa.  In this presentation, Dr. Joubert introduces their group's multimodal approach to transit network design. The development contributes to the South African public transport challenges, but results in some practical implementation challenges. To address the challenges the Optimization group had to dig quite deep and dish up some state-of-the-art technology. The planning approach emphasizes the commuter as a key stakeholder, and in doing so provide a way to promote truly sustainable mobility for all.
