Hans Ittmann

Hans Ittmann started his career at the CSIR as a researcher in 1973 in the National Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, after having been trained as a pilot. He obtained an MSc (Operations Research) and an MBA before being appointed as head of the operations research and statistics division of NRIMS. Thereafter he held a broad range of management positions within the CSIR before being appointed to head the logistics and quantitative methods group at CSIR Built Environment. He has served various terms of office with professional affiliations, both locally and internationally, including the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA) and the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS). He was both a member of the programme committee and chairperson of the local organising committee for the triennial IFORS conference that was held in South Africa in July 2008. Ittmann is well known and respected both locally and abroad for his many papers, book reviews and editorials while he serves on the editorial boards of a number of OR and logistics journals. He has been the recipient of ORSSA’s Tom Rozwadowski medal on two occasions and is a Fellow of ORSSA. He also plays a leading role in the CSIR’s highly-regarded annual State of Logistics survey. In August 2006, Ittmann was appointed as acting Executive Director of CSIR Built Environment.
